Clarastill eye drops are an aqueous sterile solution of 0.3% carboxymethylcellulose. It interacts with eye tissues and has a protective, eutrophic, moisturizing, and emollient effect. Due to the antioxidant properties of the components and the ability to counteract free radicals, Clarastill protects the eye tissues (lens, cornea, conjunctiva) from oxidative stress, which occurs because of adverse environmental factors (contact lens injury, solar radiation, smoke, dust, air conditioning, computer radiation) and trigger the development of several eye diseases, including cataracts. The saline solution contacts the eye surface for only a few seconds, providing a transient effect. Due to the presence of glycerol, water diffuses into the eye tissues (moisturizing effect) with the subsequent formation of a thin aqueous film on the surface of the cornea with the involvement of carboxymethylcellulose, which embeds in the cellulose polymer network. Thus, a hydrogel film with viscoelastic properties is formed.
The concentration of carboxymethylcellulose (0.3%) is carefully estimated to obtain hydrogel rheological characteristics identical to tear fluid and good adhesion to the outer shell of the eye, which provides protective, eutrophic, moisturizing, and emollient properties without blurring.
N-atsetylkarnozyn, one of the active ingredients of the drops, shows no specific pharmacological actions, but due to antioxidant properties and the ability to counteract free radicals, it is oxidase itself and protects the eye tissues (lens, cornea, conjunctiva) from damaging cellular lipid peroxidase, observed in cataracts.
Basic physical and chemical properties: completely transparent, miscible with water and lacrimal fluid in any proportions, does not form insoluble precipitates with metal salts and organic substances present in the lacrimal fluid; pH and osmolarity are fully compatible with eye tissues and tear fluid, which ensures high tolerability of the eye drops.
